DigHT 310
Day 1 Exercise

First create a folder for yourself on the DigHT 310 file server:

  1. Follow the instructions on how to log into the CHum310 server.
  2. Open the Students folder. Create a new folder there.
  3. Rename the new folder using with your last name followed by first letter of first name. For example, I would create a new folder with the name asayd.

Now do the following (instructions are for the Macintosh Classroom where iMacs are equipped with built-in cameras):

  1. Open a Finder window (double-click on the Macintosh HD icon.)
  2. Go to the Applications folder and find and launch the Photo Booth application.
  3. You should see yourself in the preview window.
  4. Take a snapshot of yourself by clicking the red camera icon below the preview window. Once you click it there will be a three-second countdown, then the photo will be snapped. A thumbnail of the photo will appear in the tray below the preview. You can take as many snapshots as you want until you are satisfied.
  5. The photo files should have been automatically saved in the Pictures folder of the current user's home folder. In the Humanities Computer labs that should be in /Users/labuser/Pictures. Locate the photo you want to keep and rename the photo using the format lastnameFirstInitial.jpg (e.g. asayD.jpg).
  6. Copy the photo to your new folder on the DigHT 310 server. We will be using it for a future assignment.

If you do not have access to a lab iMac as described above, you may copy any high-quality digital photo of yourself into your student folder on the server. Make sure it is in JPEG or TIFF format.
